About Me
Dr. Akash Patel is a valued dermatologist serving Howsden Dermatology with longstanding excellence and honors.
Dr. Patel was born and raised in the United States. He grew up in North Carolina and has lived in the South for most of his life. He is married and has two beautiful, college-aged children.
Dr. Patel joined Howsden Dermatology in 2005 and took over the practice in 2008. Upon the retirement of Dr. F. Lester Howsden in 2010, Dr. Patel hired Dr. Kia in 2010 and considers Dr. Kia one of the best residents he has ever taught at UT-Southwestern.
Dr. Patel has always done well in school. He graduated from NC State University with a perfect 4.0 GPA and was designated as a Valedictorian of the 1996-1997 graduating class (a class of roughly 6,500 students). He graduated Summa Cum Laude in December 1996 with a BA in Chemistry and in May 1997 with a BS in Biochemistry and minor in Economics. He was inducted into seven honor societies including Phi Beta Kappa, and he received numerous academic and athletic awards.
He attended Duke Medical School, widely regarded as one of the best medical schools in the United States. He did very well in medical school and was selected into membership in Duke’s chapter of the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society. A minimum requirement for AOA membership is a class ranking in the top 15% of the class. In Dr. Patel’s official Dean’s Letter, it is mentioned that he graduated as one of the top 5 to 10 students in his class.
Dr. Patel wanted to finish his Dermatology training in the south and he completed his Dermatology residency at Emory University – his first choice. He received excellent clinical and surgical experience by taking care of patients at the Emory Clinic and Hospital, the Atlanta Veteran’s Administration (VA) Hospital, Grady Memorial Hospital, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and Crawford Long Hospital.
Teaching and giving back are very important to Dr. Patel. He joined the faculty at UT-Southwestern Medical School in August 2005 and has thoroughly enjoyed teaching residents and medical students. Since August 2005, he helps supervise the residents in the Dermatology Clinic at Parkland Hospital (Tuesday Clinic). Many of the residents he has taught now practice Dermatology in the DFW metroplex. Dr. Patel also volunteers at a free clinic in downtown Dallas (The Agape Clinic) on Saturdays with his son providing free Dermatologic care.
Dr. Patel has presented at national Dermatology conferences and has had his work published. His most impressive publication is a Continuing Medical Education article (CME) with roughly 300 references published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. He wrote this twenty-page article in its entirety and was first author.
He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. Dr. Akash Patel is a member of numerous societies and associations. He truly enjoys being a General Dermatologist. Dr. Patel appreciates every facet of Dermatology and likes seeing rashes and surgically treating skin cancers and other lesions.
Having practiced at Howsden Dermatology since 2005, he values the meaningful relationships created with his patients the most at this point in his career. He jokes that he will practice until he is 90 years old,
so he looks forward to continuing these long-lasting relationships with his patients for many years to come.
